In 2017, a total solar eclipse occurred over North America and one of the best places to be in the world to view it was in Kinard III’s hometown of Newberry, South Carolina. Folks from all over came to his quiet little city. Right as the sky darkened, all the humans were whispering, but the insects were loud and buzzing. The bees had settled into their flowers, the cicadas warmed up the air, the fireflies danced in the temporary dark, and the crickets sang. When the sun came back, he sprinted up the block home and wrote what eventually became the final poem of the book. Characterized as "heart-breakingly romantic yet dreadfully self-aware." Poems are structurally rich and lyrical, stemming from African Methodist Episcopal Church, a microcosmic epicenter for rural Black culture and art. Crafting this book, it was written with Southern queer and trans American millenials and Gen Xers with online dating experience and Black Americans with upbringings in the church in mind.
