The book begins with a man murdering a woman on a college campus, and continues with the speaker’s own experiences of violent men, especially an ex-partner, while on the same college campus. It moves beyond retelling of violence to the reverberations of a trauma beyond its happening. It’s a book invested in language and its absence, and what can be said in the blank space of the unsayable. Major themes: Violence against women, legibility of the self, consciousness and subjectivity, empathy in the internet age, the unspeakable, the unsayable, a turn away from beauty, a refuge in beauty, violence on college campuses, violence within a relationship, living with trauma, sexual violence against women, emotional violence against women.
