Following the death of her father, "unconventional Colonial" Monica Merton leaves Australia to live with English relatives. She and her cousin Delia Oakfield are sent to St Monica's, where Monica soon makes friends and settles in to English school life, but she simply has to break bounds sometimes. Although she endeavours to follow the rules, a mystery surrounding another of the girls leads to unexpected consequences.
