A remote Scottish fishing village in depths of winter is not where Cal Hannah wants to be. Only a death can bring him back to Fasker, the place where he grew up. And only another body, found as he retraces a climb from his youth, can make him stay. Yet the village of his childhood has changed - newcomers exhibit strange behaviour as they look for their own escape from the world, while the people whom he knows bring up secrets and feelings that might be better left buried. Along the way, Cal discovers that man's best friend might be the only one he can trust. Haunted by his past and disturbed by the present, Cal has to find the answers that will bring him peace in both, and before Fasker will finally let him leave.
